§ 6-57. Impoundment of animals suspected of having rabies; etc.

  • Any animal having rabies, or suspected of having rabies, or any animal which has attacked or bitten a person, shall be confined in a place and in a manner approved by the health officer or his representative. Such animal shall be kept under observation for a period of ten (10) days. If such animal becomes ill or dies from any cause within the observation period it shall be the duty of the owner to notify the health officer. If said animal dies, it shall be the health officer's duty to have said animal's head submitted to a health department laboratory for examination for rabies. Any individual or individuals aiding and abetting in hiding an animal which has bitten or attacked anyone shall be subject to penalties provided [in this article]. Any physician who treats or is consulted by or on behalf of any person bitten by a dog or other animal shall report such fact to the local health authority unless the person bitten shall have consulted a physician.
